Working on my blog!

I have been thinking up some things to do to the blog. I have been neglecting it except mostly for reviews. I need to work on designing it better. I like my 3 columns because with 2 all my links get lost on one side. And I like that I can separate my homeschooling links from the other links. I just wanted to get a post in before Thanksgiving is here. So here is an update on my journey through life.

  • Greg's dad Neil is driving in today from Ohio. He will be spending a week or more here.

  • I have a bunch of books to review.

  • I am making sourdough rolls for Thanksgiving from scratch out of my Amish Cookbook.

  • I will be trying out a punch recipe for Thanksgiving.

  • As you can see in an earlier post, I am learning to use my new (complicated) camera. I have already taken over 500 practice pictures which 95% were deleted.

  • We are still deciding on a color for the living room for paint. We may just try and find the original color and touch up. Or find a blue (my wishes) to paint. You all know I LOVE BOLD COLORS! But the living room is a bit neutral with with Nautical theme of navy, white, tan/sand, green. I want to bring the kitchen and living room together with one same color, so either green or blue would work. I just have to add some more blue in the kitchen. I am all about rustic, tropical, and nature. As well as Old World/Country Cottage mixed which is the kitchen. I guess you could call that rustic old world. Heck, I don't know, I have tastes all my own and I follow no rules when it comes to decorating the way I want! (and not what designers say HA). I think people should decorate to their own personal likes, not what someone else says they should like. Because after all, YOU live in your house, NOT someone else. Do what ya like I say!!

  • Still pulling the upstairs together. Wanna add some Pirate stuff into the Medieval themed media room. As well as some Irish and Scottish stuff. I am really trying to pull in that "I am in another time and place" feel in there.

  • Still freaking out over the school room side of the bonus room. I really need some separation from the media side so I can brighten the school side. It still too dark. I hope be adding some white built in book shelves that it will help reflect the sun light and brighten up a bit. I mean, gee, when we close the blinds and drapes on a sunny day, it is pitch black up there. Perfect for watching movies. Speaking of movies...

I am going to go make lunch and maybe watch a movie with some sun light or some fast cars or maybe a Gerard Butler movie like P.S. I Love You. OR 300 cause I love that movie. Why I like testosterone filled movies I don't know. I guess that is part of me not being a girly girl! Not that P.S. is one of those movies. I still love romance movies, but mostly the romantic comedy, which P.S. is not. But I mostly love action movies, cars, historical, CIA cop stuff, you get the pic. So I am off to make lunch and chill before the father in law gets here.

Oh, I am debating the change of theme on the blog.

I will either go back to the medievel theme, stick with the new tropical, or find something else. I just can't decide. I like the brightness. Maybe I should make my own background with photo's of the girls. Or go way back to the cottage theme (hint: name of this blog!)

God Bless you all!

Book Review: Thirsty by Tracy Bateman

Book: Thirsty
Author: Tracey Bateman
www.waterbrookmultnomah.com

I tried to go into this book with a somewhat open mind. I am still on the fence about “Christian Vampire” books. I would say there will be lots of Christians staying away from the book.

There are a few things that some people would find offensive. There were a few instances of sexual talk as in “bedding” and “sloppy advances”. They were not mentioned in a graphic way. There is a bit of supernatural things going on, and not a Godly supernatural. There is talk of alcohol and people being drunk or drinking. But that is what this book is about.

It’s about Nina who is a recovering alcoholic, her temptations, and finding God. The characters are strong and engaging. I did not get into the book right away. I think I went into it with a reservation of the vampire theme. Before I was serious about my faith, I read a lot of vampire books (way before the craze) and I did not want to fall back into that. I didn’t find the vampire theme too strong in this book though.

I finally got into the book at the end of Chapter 8. Then I was hooked. I stayed up till about 2am reading this book. I had to force myself to put it down. It took 2 days to finish it because I do have other things to do! LOL! I found the story line to be a good one. You can’t beat an over-comer in a story.

I think the author did a great job doing a “safe” vampire book. There was a little mystery, a little excitement, and a wee bit of sci-fi murder. If you won’t be offended by the items mentioned earlier, then I think you will enjoy this book.

So over all, I went into to this book not knowing and expecting to not like it. But I came out loving it. It was nice to read a book that wasn’t all “goody too shoes”. I am really bored with reading those “oh so sweet” stories with no action or adventure. This book offers those intriguing situations that are not boring. I tend to go with books that are historical, which might include immortal knights or what ever. Vampires fit into that sci-fi historical theme. But this book is set in today’s time.

I give it 4 stars because I did think it started off slow. But it did finish with a bang!

Please remember I receive books for free for review. I do not get paid or offered any thing else in return. I give my reviews honestly (even if brutally).

Review: Touched By A Vampire (a book about God's Love?)

Book: Touched by a Vampire
Author: Beth Felker Jones
http://www.waterbrookmultnomah.com/

So when I started reading this book, I thought it was going down the path that these “Twilight” books and movies were a good thing. Boy was I wrong. It turned into the complete opposite and I was so glad it did. I ended up reading this book in one day.

I must say right up front that if you took out all the “Twilight” references, the author would still have an awesome book with great “love help”. She just uses the Twilight books and movie as perfect examples of what true love is or is not. And she nailed it.

She points out the differences between healthy love (God) and unhealthy love and relationships (Bella and Edwards love). It took me a while to watch the movie in the first place. But after reading this book, it really brought some things to my attention. I could see exactly what the author was talking about. I could really see how a young lady would think that “this is what true love looks like” when in truth, it’s just a game of manipulation (in my personal opinion).

Even if you have not watched the movie or read the book(s), you can read this book and get so much information about God’s love and how he meant for us to share our love with a spouse. So if you want a short read on God’s love, then try this book out.

I give it 4 stars
I had to deduct because of the Twilight references. I do think the author could have done a great job with out them. But it made for good comparisons.

Review: A Drean To Call My Own by Tracie Peterson

Title: A Dream To Call My Own
Author: Tracie Peterson
Publisher: Bethany House

Overview: Finally! My favorite character in the Brides of Gallatin County Series...drum roll…Lacy Gallatin. I have really enjoyed getting to know the Gallatin sisters and their quests. For Lacy, I love her spunkiness! In this book we get to see how love blossomed between Lacy and Dave Shepard. Lacy was bent on finding the men who killed her father. But now she feels like something is missing. And when she meets her fathers killer she, and you, will be shocked to know who it is. I can say its not who I thought it was.

I love these books. I am glad I got the chance to review them. I now look for Tracie Peterson books. She offers heart warming and touching stories. I feel like I really know the characters, they are that real.

Pros: We get a lesson in forgiveness and so did Lacy. I also liked that Beth and Gwen’s life was still intertwined in this book so we get to see how things turn out for them. I hate books that leave you wandering “I wander what happens to the rest of their lives?”

A quote to live by: “Good men face up to the truth even when it involves folks they love.” Cubby, chapter 24

Cons: It had to end!

Recommendation: 5 stars This is my favorite series of all time!

Review: Love Has A Face by Michele Perry

Title: Love Has A Face
Author: Michele Perry
http://www.bakerpublishinggroup.com/Book.asp?isbn=978-0-8007-9478-1

Overview: Inspiring story of a women who was born without her left leg. She lives on faith in dangerous Sudan working with orphaned children. It’s a heart warming story of her struggles and challenges. She is a strong women who “whips circles” around us. This book will teach you how important simple things are to those in need any where in the world. It will make you think the next time you worry about something “silly” like my drink needs more ice. When there are kids without water some place.

Pros: Challenges your heart and your faith. It will also inspire you. My favorite quote from the book is “One thing I have learned in praying for healing is that when a person experiences progress of any kind, thank Jesus for what He is doing and keep praying!” This is inspiring me to want to step out and pray for others.

Cons: Getting over your stumbling blocks after you get inspired and don’t know how to begin to do more!

Recommendation: 4 stars

Do you Christmas shop or holiday shop?

I do Christmas Shopping only! Not holiday shopping. So you can count me in on this boycott of GAP and its stores (Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic). If you do Christmas shopping, you should support the cause. They are trying to keep Jesus out of Christmas. We know Jesus was not born on December 25th but we celebrate his birth. He is the reason for Christmas (lets not get in to pagan influences please!). So if you shop at these stores your ARE supporting the anti-Jesus/Christian agenda. Just remember that. I NEVER shop these stores because no matter what time of the year it is, your supporting the anti-Christian agenda period.

So put your big person britches on and stand up for your Christian beliefs and sign this petition.

Review: Molly's December Digest

This is the most exciting issue I have read. And that is because it is one of, like a lot of people, my most favorite times. I love to hear the Christmas music and watch the Christmas movies (which we watch all year long when in the mood). So this digest has really lit a fire in our “holiday mood”.

In this digest you will find lots of warming family traditions. My favorite story is Today a Laptop, Tomorrow a Castle written by Aubrey Lively. I liked it so much because I can relate. I just love castles and I also love to write (when I am in the mood!) An article I enjoyed was Parenting That Pays written by Jennifer Sikora. There some very important points made for teaching our children to think of others instead of focusing on our selves (and presents). I think you will be blessed by her story of her son at the store.

For the fun stuff, yes, what would this season be with out fun stuff? RECIPES! There are tons of recipes. Most are easy and fun. There are a few, brutal honesty warning, I found to be a bit “cheesy” or not fresh (meatloaf?). Some were part of the weekly menu article (meant to be a change from the normal holiday food) and some were in other articles. I think this is more my aversion to what is mention and not the “suggesty” (did I make this word up?). There are lots of candy recipes. I love the candy recipes and I love peppermint bark. BUT it was missing the dark chocolate and uses only white chocolate. So I would change that recipe a bit. But aren’t recipes meant to be changed and played with? There are also a few recipes in here that are about popcorn, and I love popcorn. I think it should have its own food category on the pyramid.

On to all the gift ideas, shop or not to shop? that is someone’s question. There are lots of ideas about gifting. Should you, how much should you spend, who do you buy for, making gifts, and lots more ideas. If you are a shopper then you may want to check out the category on what is on Sale This Month.

And one last thing I want to talk about is the section on Dates to Remember. I really like to see this section. I have found some things in here I did not know we could talk about in our home school day. Just a few days are; eat a red apple day, poinsettia day, national chocolate covered anything day, humbug day, and many more. These are always a treat for me to read.

I think this is my favorite digest so far. It seems to be filled with tons more information that I am interested in. I am sure if you buy it, you will not be disappointed.

Stay tuned for my "Old Fashion Christmas Wrapping" idea's and pictures! (HINT: Do you remember Little House on the Praire? I remember watching the TV show as a child every night as my aunt Anne babysat me. I remember little Laura opening up her one little gift wrapped in brown paper. )

Book Review: The Enclave

The Enclave
By Karen Hancock
Bethany House Publishers

This book was hard for me to get into. The story line was just not one I want to read normally. But I thought I would give some other genres a try and get away from my normal historical reading.

The characters were interesting, and the author did an awesome job at keeping the details straight. There are twists and lots of science fiction going on, (as well as weird names I could not get past). There is some cloning going on, bad guys, and just plain weird characters (enforcers). You can feel the thrills and they keep you on the edge of your seat (or page).

So, if you like sci-fi this could be the book for you. I hear this author is awesome in the sci-fi world. And I would say she is to those that are interested in this kind of story line.

Book Review: God and Guinness

The Search for God and Guinness
A Biography of the Beer that Changed the World
By Stephen Mansfield

I have had my moments when I was not sure if Christians should drink beer. I was mostly OK with wine because, after all, wine is in the bible. There is lots of wine drinking in the bible. Some (a lot) instances it shows irresponsible drinking. So I have gone from “it’s ok, as long as you don’t get drunk”, to “no, Christians shouldn’t drink”.

But back to the book for some interesting information.

I learned a few things from this book. What I found most interesting was the information about Martin Luthur (not to mention all the other famous reformers) who was supposedly a beer lover (German like in this house). And that his wife Katie was a skilled brewer before they married.

There are so many historical facts in this book. I was amazed by all the history. Did you know there was beer on the Mayflower?

Quote from page 32: “The truth is that most post-Reformation Christians believed as their first-century fathers did – that drunkenness is a sin but that alcohol in moderation is one of the great gifts of God.”

I also enjoyed reading about Ireland and the history of the country and about Arthur Guinness. He did some great things for all. He was definitely a caring person and wanted to make sure everyone had necessities, like beer for safe drinking, and not nasty dirty water or none at all.

So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman,… John 4:46a

Interesting Halloween Article, and YES its almost that time of year again!

I have already been thinking about Halloween. I am already getting the begging to go "trick or treating" when my girls know they are not aloud to go. In the past we would go to Chuckee Cheese and just buy a bag of candy (after all, they only want the candy).

To side step for just a momment...
Just the other day I asked my dad about some reading, and he told me to watch a video on youtube by Chuck Missler. Come to find out, I had some of his stuff already on my reminder/wishlist on my paperbackswap account. So was it a co-winky-dink that he mentioned him and I already has some stuff lined up? I am not sure, but one of the things I was interested in was an audio about Halloween (listen HERE).

So back to it! This is an article on the website of Dr. Chuck Missler. What is funny is that I actually read this article last year and was going to write a post about it. But that did not happen. So here it is, copied from the website and click HERE to see the page. Just so we get this straight, I did not write this and I am only borrowing and sharing it with others. It does not belong to me, it belongs to Koinonia House.

Happy Reading!

An Invitation to the Occult?
Halloween - 1997
by Chuck Missler

This is always a difficult time for Christians, especially those with children. It has been suggested that for a Christian to be asked to celebrate Halloween is like asking a Holocaust survivor to celebrate Hitler's birthday!

It is also a dangerous time for some, since many of the seemingly "harmless" involvements associated with Halloween can also be "entries" for the occult, and can prove very tragic for the unwary.

Pagan Background

In ancient Britain and Ireland, the Celtic festival of Samhain was observed on October 31, the end of summer. November 1 was the new year for both Celtic and Anglo-Saxon calendars and was one of the most important and yet sinister calendar festivals of the Celtic Year.

Settling in northern France and the British Isles, the Celtic people engaged in occultic arts and worshiped nature, giving it supernatural, animistic qualities. (Much like our Federal government is attempting to enforce today.)

The ancient Druids were the learned priestly class of the Celtic religion. Many of their beliefs and practices were similar to those of Hinduism, such as reincarnation and the transmigration of the soul, which teaches that people may be reborn as animals. The Druids believed that on October 31, the night before their New Year and the last day of the old year, Samhain, the Lord of Death, gathered the souls of the evil dead who had been condemned to enter the bodies of animals.

The Druids also believed that the punishment of the evil dead would be lightened by sacrifices, prayers and gifts to the Lord of Death. (This begins to reveal the strange link between this holiday and the non-Biblical concept of purgatory.)

The souls of the dead were supposed to revisit their homes on this day, and the autumnal festival acquired a sinister significance, with ghosts, witches, hobgoblins, black cats, fairies, and demons of all kinds said to be roaming about. It was the time to placate the supernatural powers controlling the processes of nature.

And, on October 31, 1517, Martin Luther drove a stake into the heart of many of the prevailing non-Biblical concepts by nailing his famous 95 theses to the Castle Church door in Wittenberg, Germany, which started the movement known today as the Reformation-the single most important event in modern history.1 Appropriately, he did this on Halloween.

Modern Halloween Traditions

In early American history, Halloween was not widely practiced until the 20th century, when it was introduced by the Irish Catholic settlements. Gradually, Halloween became a secular observance, and many customs and practices developed. The carved pumpkin may have originated with the witches' use of a skull with a candle inside to light the way to coven meetings.

Since 1965 UNICEF, an agency of the United Nations, has attempted to incorporate into the Halloween observance the collection of money for the United Nations Children's Fund. This exploitation by the ungodly United Nations of this pagan holiday seems strangely appropriate.

The Occult is Increasingly Popular

Halloween is, for many, a "crossover" involvement in which innocent games can lead to serious entanglement with real witches, neo-pagans, New Agers, and other occultists.2 A common pastime is the use of a Ouija board to attempt to contact ghosts or spirits that are believed to be roaming about. This can lead to serious consequences including demon possession.3 Demons have a vested interest in Halloween because it supports the occult, and it also offers novel and unexpected opportunities to control and influence people.

Forms of the occult can include mediums, channelers, clairvoyants, psychics, spiritists, diviners, mystics, gurus, shamans, psychical researchers, Yogis, psychic and holistic healers, astral travel, astrology, mysticism, Ouija boards, Tarot cards, contact with the dead, UFOs, and thousands of other practices which almost defy cataloging.

Occultism includes Satanism, astrology, Kabbalah, Gnosticism, theosophy, witchcraft and many forms of serious magic. It includes activities seeking the acquisition of "hidden" things-which are expressly forbidden by God in the Bible.

The Biblical View

Halloween practices can open the door to the occult and can introduce forces into people's lives that they are not equipped to combat.4 There is genuine power in the occult, but it is demonic power.5

Any serious study of Biblical demonology will reveal Satan as the power behind false religion, witchcraft, idolatry and the occult.6 The Word of God makes it clear that these are all to be shunned as dangerous. There were many superstitions and false concepts in ancient Israel about which the Bible is silent. However, occultism, in any form, was punishable by death! Why?

The spiritual power and reality behind idols involves demons.7 The Bible commands us to shun occult practices. Mediums and spiritists are expressly prohibited.8 Nowhere are such practices acceptable.

A Halloween Project?

Every year, many people are perplexed as to how to deal with the children's celebrations surrounding Halloween. On the one hand, participating in the perpetuation of the usual pagan (and occultic) rituals are hardly the enterprise of a Biblical Christian. On the other hand, creating constructive alternatives can be challenging.

Many churches and families organize a "Harvest" festival with games, prizes, etc., as an alternative party opportunity. These are gaining widespread interest and are to be encouraged.

Organizing a drama event to involve the older children is an alternative candidate; such an effort could include Saul and the Witch of Endor, from 1 Samuel 28, as a play.

[The winning scripts resulting from a play-writing contest held a few years ago are available through K-House.]

Your Protection

Intellect alone is insufficient. "If it were possible, it would deceive the very elect." This is another example of the necessity to truly understand the Armor of God as outlined in Ephesians 6. This brief review was excerpted from our featured briefing package, Halloween: Invitation to the Occult?

Book Review: Seaside Letters

Seaside Letters
A Nantucket Love Story
by: Denise Hunter
Published by Thomas Nelson
Reviewed for Thomas Nelson http://brb.thomasnelson.com/

This book to me is like the movie Another Cinderella Story with Hilary Duff. Sabrina/Sweatpea is emailing, and Hilary Duff’s character is instant messaging and is in high school. I loved that movie as it was modern and fairy tale like. This book puts me in that mind frame. This book is based on adults, but they are like 2 love struck teens who are afraid to tell each other the truth. Its fun, sweet, and refreshing to me and includes a little light drama towards the end. It’s a lighthearted read that keeps you interested. It is typical for a romance of 2 people in love but afraid to tell it.
The details are engaging but not over done. I personally don’t like the details to be over bearing and take away from the story line. You can have too many details on the setting and this book gives balance so you don’t get distracted from the story line.

I give it 4 stars!

Book Review: Fearless by Max Lucado

Title: Fearless
Author: Max Lucado
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
http://brb.thomasnelson.com/

Let me start by saying "These types of books are not my normal interst so they are a bit harder for me to read and review"

Overview: From the back of the book: Imagine your life, wholly untouched by angst. What if faith, not fear, was your default reaction to the threats? If you could hover a fear magnet over your heart and extract every last shaving of dread, insecurity, or doubt, what would remain? Envision the day when you can trust more and fear less. Can you imagine your life without fear?

Pros: Endorsed by Dave Ramsey, Discussion Guide for self or study groups, adaptable for young adults, lots of bible references, emotional stories you could possibly relate to on some level.

Cons: I guess this really depends on how much “self help” you are OK with. I don’t mind some self help because I believe God can send us help in other forms. Just like he sends a Dr. to fix your broken arm, he can send a person to give you encouragement tools to help you through something. For some this could be a con and to some it may not be. As you read above “What if faith, not fear, was your default reaction to the threats?”

Opinion: Lots of good encouragement. I found myself laughing at some example stories. They were serious stories, but what they were saying was true or could be true and I like to use laughter to chase fear away. One of the stories (page 152) was about a lady giving birth to her baby and a lawyer was there for the baby and he was reading “the fine print” to the unborn baby. Gee, why not, if we don’t change some things in our government, soon pets can sue us because we don’t feed them the right food. One very interesting chapter is 5 “My child is in danger”. I think all or most moms can relate to having fear about their children.
Over all, I think this is a good book to read. Just remember, you can not heal with out God as your healer and number one Physician. So if you need healing from fear, then God may use this book as a tool for you. As usual, you should pray for Gods guidance.
